Celebrate Memorial Day responsibly

Memorial Day weekend is here, and for many, it means a much-needed three-day break from the daily grind.

But let’s not forget the meaning of this weekend. It’s a chance to honor those who are serving and have served our country in the military. Many have given their lives to protect our freedom and our country while many others are continuing to risk their lives for us.

So be sure to thank them and take time to remember those who have lost their lives while protecting us.

Memorial Day Weekend is also a time to enjoy the weather as summer gets closer and the days get warmer.

People will barbeque, get out on the water and just relax and enjoy life. Through all of it, the most important thing is safety.

Make sure that if you’re out on the water, you’re wearing your live vest. Make sure you are taking all of the safety precautions needed.

If you are driving, please don’t drink because when you drink and drive, you make the roads unsafe not only for yourself, but also for others. Also, there are sure to be several checkpoints set up throughout the weekend to keep inebriated drivers off the road.

In Washington Parish, several Memorial Day activities are taking place.

The Varnado Store Museum in Franklinton is celebrating Memorial Day with a 10 a.m. program on May 23.

Three programs take place May 25.

A Memorial Day program being presented by American Legion Post 24 is at 10 p.m. at Fisher Cemetery in Richardson between Louisiana Highways 1056 and 440. On May 25, American Legion Post 24 is also hosting a program at 6 p.m. at the Veterans Plot in Ponemah Cemetery.

There is another program going on May 25 at 11 a.m. at the Magee Cemetery in Clifton on Louisiana Highway 38.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and remember to set aside some time to honor those who have given so much for this country.
