Irene Smith

Irene Smith, 89, of Bogalusa, born on Dec. 1, 1925, in New Orleans, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2015, at her residence.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bogalusa, and retired 35 years from Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan Wheat of Bogalusa; one son, Charles “Rick” Merrick Smith (Marie) of Georgetown, Texas; two grandchildren, Liz Dunaway (Blaine) and Lesley Wheat, both of Bogalusa; and four great-grandchildren, Claire and Caroline Dunaway, Tate Roach and Ethan Rester.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Smith Jr.; and her parents, William August Merrick and Olivia Irene Bertoniere Merrick.

Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 135 Rio Grande St., in Bogalusa, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Rev. Bob Belknap and the Rev. Anthony Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Ponemah Cemetery.
