Howard Phelps

Howard Glenn Phelps, 74, a resident of Thomas, died at 2:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
He was a former tugboat captain for Devall Towing and Boat Services Inc. Glenn began working on tugboats at 18 years of age and worked them throughout his life. Even after retiring, he continued in a part-time capacity for a total of 56 years of service. He planted a garden each year and hoed the ground every day that he could to insure that the plants would be successful, and they always were. Glenn also enjoyed cooking for his family and friends and working outside. He was a longtime member of First United Pentecostal Church of Franklinton.
He is survived by: wife of 51 years, Kathleen Cox Phelps of Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Glen and Geneen Phelps of Thomas; daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Bobby Story of Thomas; eight grandchildren, Brandon Phelps, Dusty Phelps, Jaden Story, Jessieuna Story, Christian Story, Bethany Story, McKaylin Story and McKaya Story; and a special nephew and niece, Wayne and Nikki Hunt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch Phelps and Lela Mae Foster Phelps.
Visitation was at Crain Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 4, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday, Jan. 5, at First United Pentecostal Church from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the church at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. John Mark Franklin, the Rev. Charles Ray Creel and the Rev. Raymond Meyers officiating. Burial will follow in the Nobles Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jody Cox, Zack Phelps, Joe O’Bryant, Wayne Hunt, T.J. Cox and Dewayne Broom. Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Cox, Jerry McDaniel, Cody Phelps, Shane Cox and Bryan O’Bryant.
