SPECIAL TO THE DAILY NEWS

On Thursday, April 3, Mr. Ball’s 10th-grade Civics class from Bowling Green School visited the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office to tour the administrative facilities and jail. After a swearing-in ceremony in Sheriff Smith’s Office, the students were taught about the different functions of the Sheriff’s Office.

Upstairs, they learned about tax collection, fingerprinting, human resources, budgeting and purchasing, and the other essential daily tasks carried out by the dozens of administrative employees of the Sheriff’s Office.

Downstairs, they learned about the dispatch and patrol functions of the Sheriff’s Office before being guided through the Jail facility, viewing the kitchen, control room, and main security tower. Here, they saw where distress calls are received, crimes are investigated, and inmates are housed after being arrested.

A big thanks goes out to Bowling Green School, Mr. Ball, and the students who visited today. Hopefully, the tour opened their eyes to some of the details of how the Sheriff’s Office and Jail Facility operate on a daily basis and helped them to understand one of the important civic functions of their Parish Government.
