SPECIAL TO THE DAILY NEWS
In a continued effort to enhance the safety and preparedness of local law enforcement, Washington Parish Deputy Sheriffs recently completed two intensive training programs aimed at bolstering their capabilities in both active shooter response and crime scene investigation.
Last week, six Washington Parish Deputy Sheriffs were certified to teach Active Shooter Response by ALERRT, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, in a course taught by Texas State University. The course was hosted by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office at the National Guard Armory in Franklinton, and was also attended by Law Enforcement Professionals from the Bogalusa and Franklinton Police Departments, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
This week-long course certifies deputies to teach their fellow Law Enforcement Professionals the necessary tactics and operating procedures associated with successfully responding to an active shooter situation.
Deputies took an in-depth look at active shooter response, including first contact, room and building clearing, small-team and single-person tactics, setting up professional cordons and safety zones, communicating with neighboring agencies and emergency personnel, treating casualties, and scene command. Learning these skills at the instructor level allows the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office to conduct training more frequently and more effectively, and better prepares the deputies who attended to face an active shooter situation in Washington Parish should one ever occur.
In addition to the ALERRT training, seven Washington Parish Deputy Sheriffs completed an advanced course in Crime Scene Investigation, hosted by the Louisiana State Police. Deputies received detailed instruction from seasoned detectives about how to control and analyze crime scenes, evidence collection and classification, and how to put together the hundreds of puzzle pieces often associated with complicated scenes.
Thanks to the cadre of instructors who gave our very own Washington Parish Deputy Sheriffs the tools they need to investigate crime scenes in a concise, efficient, and effective way. These tools will be an asset to our Deputies in the field, and help to make Washington Parish a safer, more peaceful place for everyone who lives here.
