SPECIAL TO THE DAILY NEWS

On May 9th, as families, friends, and faculty gather at Pine High School to celebrate the Class of 2025, one seat near the front will remain temporarily empty. That seat belongs to Thomas “Peanut” Bernard Jr., a name that echoes pride in hallways, locker rooms, and classrooms alike. Thomas won’t be there right at the start, not because he doesn’t value the moment, but because he’ll be chasing greatness on another stage: the Louisiana state track finals.

While his classmates begin to file into their graduation ceremony, Thomas will be sprinting down the track, leaping over hurdles with the same grit and determination that have defined his time at Pine High. A fierce competitor and multi-sport athlete, Thomas is a three-time First  Team All-District defensive back and the 2025 Second Team All-District offensive athlete. On the basketball court, he earned honorable mention for varsity.

In track and field, Thomas’s dedication soared. This year, he claimed victory at the prestigious Cowgirl Relays, and placed second at both the district and regional levels, earning his place at the state finals. It’s no surprise to anyone at PHS that Thomas would rise to the occasion.

But beyond the awards and the stats lies the true heart of the story. Thomas “Peanut” Bernard Jr. is known just as much for his work ethic and kindness as he is for his athletic achievements. Balancing sports, academics, and responsibilities at home, he has become a role model to his peers and a source of pride for the entire Pine High School community.

Though he may arrive late to his graduation, Thomas will walk across that stage with more than just a diploma in hand. He carries with him the admiration of his classmates, the support of his school, and the lessons of persistence, humility, and heart.

Pine High School stands firmly behind Thomas, cheering him on as he leaps toward his future, both literally and figuratively. Because no matter the order of events, Thomas Bernard Jr. has already crossed the finish line of greatness.
