SPECIAL TO THE DAILY NEWS
On Monday, May 26, James B. Lorio was stopped while attempting to escape from the Washington Parish Jail through an air conditioning duct in his cell block.
Near midnight on 26 May, inmates in an adjoining block heard Lorio moving through the air conditioning duct and flagged the internal cameras to get the attention of the corrections officers working that evening. Officers responded quickly to the cell block and found that Lorio had returned after realizing that his escape path was blocked and that officers had been alerted.
Lorio was subsequently charged with Simple Escape for leaving the cell block to which he was confined.
Sheriff Smith would like to thank the corrections officers who were on shift Monday evening for their diligence and fast response. “The number one way that we secure the jail is through the actions of the corrections officers who are charged with ensuring security and peace inside the facility. Our shift supervisors and leaders are the reason we don’t have some of the problems that we are seeing recently at the other jails in the area.”
