Since July 2024, the office says it has restructured its patrol and communications divisions to reduce response times and improve efficiency. In May, dispatch operations moved to the new 911 Communications Center in Franklinton, centralizing emergency response. Sheriff Smith also implemented higher physical fitness standards and began bi-monthly firearms training to enhance deputy readiness and safety.
Over a dozen deputies earned certifications for patrol or corrections, with many attending specialized training in active-shooter response, crime scene investigations and mitigating mental health crisis. Sheriff Smith also launched meetings to strengthen internal communication, highlight promotions, and announce awards.
The report addressed overcrowding at the Washington Parish Jail – said to be the most overcrowded per capita in Louisiana. Plans are said to be underway to build a new facility near the 911 Center.
Community engagement remained a priority. During Love the Boot Week, deputies helped clean William Bailey, Jr. Memorial Park. At Thanksgiving, the office partnered with area Councils on Aging to support holiday meals in Bogalusa, Angie, Franklinton, and Pine. In May, deputies joined the Louisiana Special Olympics Torch Run, completing forty-one miles through the parish.
Initiatives designed to connect with the area’s youth also were reviewed. Students received the Sheriff Jason Smith Charities Future Leader Awards and received $250 scholarships based on leadership and faculty recommendations.
