Not even a summer rainstorm could dampen the spirit of the community on Saturday, July 26, as Brister Property Sales & Investments hosted a vibrant back-to-school event at Cassidy Park. The annual giveaway drew hundreds of families eager to prepare for the upcoming school year, with organizers estimating more than 800 children were served.
From backpacks to binders, notebooks to organizers, students walked away with everything they need to start the school year off right. The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Jason Smith and his deputies, was on hand to distribute supplies and show support alongside 23 nonprofit organizations and dozens of local businesses and government agencies.

“Despite the weather, we were able to give away all of the supplies we brought,” said Sheriff Smith. “It was inspiring to see so many parents and students stick it out through the rain. Our students are the next generation of leaders in Washington Parish, and supporting them as they return to school is one of the most important things we can do.”
An early downpour didn’t stop the event—organizers joked it felt like a mini hurricane—but the turnout was strong, and the generosity overwhelming. By day’s end, not a single supply was left behind.
Brister Property Sales & Investments, the event’s host, extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed. “We are deeply grateful to God for making this day possible,” they shared in a statement. “We were thrilled to see such a great turnout, and we’re already planning for double the attendance next year.”
The organization also announced that their popular Movie Nights in the Park will resume in just a couple of weeks. “Stay tuned,” they added. “We can’t wait to see everyone again soon!”
As families dry off and prepare for the start of the school year, the success of Saturday’s event stands as a testament to Bogalusa’s strong community spirit—and its shared commitment to the next generation.
