Franklinton won its first game, 61-51, over Northshore and then tied its second with Lakeshore, 35-35, Monday in Northshore Summer Basketball League competition, which took place at Pelican Park.

Contests in this league have rules to keep the games moving along.

Teams play a pair of 20-minute halves with a running clock until the 1-minute mark of each period and then they play under standard timing rules.

If a player is fouled in the act of shooting, they get one free throw, which counts for whatever the shot was worth. If they hit the bucket and get fouled, the free throw is the standard one point.

Franklinton (6-3-1 at press time) made a major comeback in the opener. Northshore scored the game’s first 15 points over the opening four minutes.

Franklinton came back and took a 31-27 lead at halftime.

The Demons opened the lead to 18 before winning by the 10-point margin.

Franklinton had balanced scoring in the first contest. Quincy Lewis led the team with 10 points.

Tray Anders, Azende T. Magee and Ryche Jenkins all posted eight, while Azende O. Magee, Darrius Dawson and K.J. Magee all finished with seven.

Nick Burkhalter added four, with Gerald Coleman contributing two.

Franklinton made another comeback in the second game.

The Demons trailed by eight at halftime, but rebounded and did so in a big way.

The Demons came all of the way back and took a 35-31 advantage with four minutes left.

Lakeshore tied the contest at 35-35. Franklinton had the final shot but missed the 3-pointer.

The clubs played a 2-minute overtime period, but were still even and the game ended in a 39-39 tie.

Anders topped the Demons with 18 points, while Jenkins put up eight.

Burkhalter posted seven, with Dawson, Jadwyn Warren and Azende O. Magee finishing with two each.

Franklinton High School coach Randall Ginn said his club was off last week and practiced, but added you could tell the team was a little rusty.

“The kids are doing a great job of putting the team above themselves,” Ginn said. “Our kids, who aren’t our top players like, K.J. Magee, Darrius Dawson and Gerald Coleman, did a great job of diving on the floor for loose balls. They didn’t get many minutes, but they took advantage of them.”

Franklinton played its final summer league games after yesterday’s press time.
