The Pre-K 3 “Busy Bees” in Dee Gibson’s class at Annunciation Catholic School celebrated Halloween with two weeks of activities, beginning with learning about pumpkins the week following the fair. The children learned how to grow, measure and weigh pumpkins, and they made a pumpkin man and a jack-o-lantern collage titled “Shine with the Light of Jesus,” which will be raffled off at the annual auction. The children also learned the numeral 3 and triangles, and they made a triangle cat and counted up to three objects.

The theme for the following week was monsters. The children made handprint monsters and a big, green monster using for inspiration the book “Go Away, Big Green Monster” by Ed Emberely. The monster unit led up to the celebration of All Saints’ Day Nov. 1. The 3-year-olds dressed as their baptismal saint (Catholic) or their favorite saint (non-Catholic) when they attended Mass and processed in with Father Pat. At the end of Mass, the children were brought up on the altar and gave a little information about each saint to the student body.

The 3- and 4-year-olds spent the week learning about the saints during religion class, beginning the discussion begin with Halloween (All Hallows Eve) and the reason for its celebration. In addition, the children also made paper bag puppets for each of their saints, which remained on display on the bulletin board during the month of November.

For snacks the children enjoyed St. Cecilia’s keys and a cupcake topped with a picture of their saint.
