Bogalusa’s Lumberjacks continued their preparations for the 2013 season Wednesday, going against the St. Augustine Purple Knights in the spring game at Lewis V. Murray Jr. Stadium.

The event began as a controlled scrimmage with each team’s starters running 15 plays offensively and defensively. The second stringers came in for 10 each before it continued with 15 more.

Things concluded with a pair of 12-minute quarters.

St. Augustine won the times portion, 16-0. The Purple Knights drove down the field in each of the first two drives, but Bogalusa’s defense stepped up and made plays to hold St. Aug off of the board. The Lumberjacks’ unit held St. Aug on fourth down during the opening possession, then William Toussiant intercepted a pass inside of his own 5 to end the second possession.

The Purple Knights defense opened the scoring with safeties, following the defensive plays. The first one came on a sack, and the second was an errant snap to give St. Aug a 4-0 lead.

Following the second safety the Purple Knights scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass.

Bogalusa started the second period by going three-and-out, then the Jacks’ defense forced a turnover on downs.

St. Augustine scored the final points on about a 50-yard touchdown pass.

During the controlled portion of the contest, Timothy Toussaint hit Lorenzo James for a touchdown from about 25 yards. Dedrick Briggs ran up the right for a 3-yard score.

Marcus Harrison picked off a pass to help the Lumberjacks’ defense.

“We were looking for execution and to see who would come out and compete,” Bogalusa coach Craig Jones said. “We’ve got the game film, and we’ll start evaluating that. We’re a pretty young team, and we lost a lot of seniors. They’re a well-coached team. They brought it to us, but I saw some things that I didn’t know we had. I saw some fight in our guys, so that’s very exciting.”

Both clubs enter this season after going to the playoffs in 2012. Bogalusa was the 20th seed in Class 3A and lost to 13th seeded Jennings, 21-14.

St. Augustine was in as the 10th seed and lost to eventual state champion and second-seeded Edna Karr, 28-12.
