The Washington Parish Council on Aging’s picnic, scheduled for April 26, will offer food, fun and a little friendly competition to local seniors.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. in front of the stage at the fairgrounds, activity coordinator April Dupre said. While some benches will available for seating, participants are asked to bring a lawn chair and umbrella so they will be shaded and more comfortable.
Attendees can demonstrate their creativity by participating in a hat contest. Entrants are required to decorate a hat, such as a straw hat, ahead of time and bring it along, Dupre said. When it is time for judging, all contestants will line up, and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. One entry will also be selected most unique. Winners will receive gift certificates.
For the guys, there will also be a men’s sexy leg contest, Dupre said. Those entering will model their legs, and first, second and third prizes will be awarded.
A lunch will be served, and door prizes will be handed out, Dupre said.
In addition, attendees can browse through several informational booths and take part in a cake walk. Those who choose to do so can also dance around to the music. Games will include fishing in a duck/fish pond; a bean bag toss; a ring toss game; and horseshoes, Dupre said.
Last year’s picnic drew a crowd of about 205 senior citizens. The people who regularly eat lunch at one of the Council on Aging’s meal sites typically attend, but there are other participants who just attend the annual picnic, Dupre said. She would like to see a nice turnout on picnic day.
“Anybody 60 or over that lives in Washington Parish is welcome to come,” Dupre said.
