As of 6 a.m. today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast the crest for the Bogue Chitto River at Franklinton at 21.7 feet at 7 p.m. tonight. Flood stage is 12 feet, and a level of 21 feet is the threshold of the major flood stage.

The Washington Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness reminds residents that the crest stage is subject to change, and asks people to remain vigilant.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that it has been working through the night to help ensure public safety. It had planned to send boats to assist Plaquemines and St. John parishes on Thursday, but had to “redirect them to our own needs here.”

At 4:50 a.m., Chief Deputy Mike Haley reported: “Water has covered area below jail. Sallyport is flooded.

“All dark and flooded in Bogue Chitto Heights. Some residents milling around on high ground (shoulders of highway) along Hwy 25. Lots of residents’ vehicles parked on shoulder of highway.”
