Each Friday, The Daily News will recognize individuals and businesses in Washington Parish who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.

We believe that an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.

Because this is a salute to members of the community of Washington Parish, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• Seven-year-old Jence Simms, of Madisonville, who set up a lemonade stand July 29 and raised $130 to benefit neglected horses. The Humane Society of Louisiana has designated Aug. 18 as the first statewide Lemon-Aid day for Animals and will honor Simms as “Lemon-Aid Ambassador for Animals for 2012.”

• Henry Crawford, who has been selected Mt. Hermon School head football coach.

• Jeff Tageant, head baseball coach at Franklinton High School, who was recently recognized at the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s annual clinic in Baton Rouge for 25 years of service and leadership given to high school athletics.

• Halley Honaker, who recently opened a physical location of her clothing and accessories store, Lucky Buckle, in Franklinton.

• Bogalusa High School’s Class of 1962, which celebrated its 50th reunion on March 31 at Union Square in Bogalusa.

• Acme Machine & Welding, which last Tuesday completed the purchase of lots 15 and 18 in the Franklinton Industrial Park.

• Entergy, which recently donated $2,500 to a joint endeavor of the city of Bogalusa and the Chamber of Commerce to create a special economic development program for commercial area revitalization.

• The Bogue Tuchenna Scout District, which won five divisions at the 46th Annual National Invitational White River Canoe Race that ran from July 26 to 28 in Arkansas.

• Hillcrest Baptist Church, which collected backpacks and school supplies as a mission project this summer.

• The Franklinton Elementary School Student Council, which donated $250 each to the American Cancer Society and Magnolia Chapter Humane Society at the close of the 2011-12 school year.
