Ben’s Ford Christian School’s Eagles captured an exciting victory over Wilkinson County Christian Academy, 40-36, in their home opener last Friday night.
Wilkinson scored the game’s first points on a touchdown and then converted the 2-pointer to lead 8-0.
Ben’s Ford responded by tallying 20 consective points to take a 20-8 lead.
Wilkinson came back with 20-straight of its own to make it 28-20 midway through the third quarter.
The Eagles then put up 14 in a row and led 34-28, but the game continued back-and-forth, as Wilkinson tied the contest, 34-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Ben’s Ford then went up, 40-34.
Wilkinson picked up a safety to close the gap and then drove down to 17. WCCA threw a pass that was caught, but as the receiver stretched for the goal line, he fumbled and Ben’s Ford recovered, as the Eagles hung on for the victory.
“It was an emotional game,” Ben’s Ford coach Cole Holden said. “It was a roller coaster. There were a lot of highs and a lot of lows, but I was proud of the way the kids fought back. We blew a big lead, being up 20-8, but the kids showed a lot of heart in fighting back and overcoming the adversity.”
Daniel Pittman threw for five touchdowns for the Eagles.
In the third quarter, Ashton Hines suffered a lower back injury and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Holden said it was a precautionary measure because of where the injury was located. Holden said it was to his lower back. Holden said Hines still has pain there, but is fine and will be out this week.
The victory put the Eagles with a 1-2 record this season.
Ben’s Ford will try to make it two straight, as the Eagles are back in action Friday, Sept. 11 at home against Centreville Academy.
