Nine titles were on the line, at RCC hosted the 2016 Rayburn Correctional Center Louisiana Department of Corrections Terry Wood Memorial King of Hearts Boxing Championship and Offender Arts & Crafts Sale in front of a packed gym Thursday night.

The event helped Relay for Life.

“We’ve got some of the local politicians here tonight, a lot of law enforcement and all areas of Washington Parish are represented,” RCC Warden Sandy McCain said. “The citizens of Washington Parish are everywhere. Our guys did a good job on the crafts. (RCC Recreation Director) Damon Smith and Col. Billy Anderson did a good job of putting this on.”

Smith said he was pleased with the turnout.

“We’ve had some really great fights. We’ve had a knockout or two and we’ve had some really crowd-pleasing matches,” Smith said. “It was a really good event.”

Besides the boxing, fans had an opportunity to purchase crafts made by the offenders.

Two of the title matches involved boxers from the Rayburn Correctional Center and RCC had one boxer attempting to get an opportunity to go after a title next month.

In the second match of the evening, RCC’s Jerrod Henry faced DCI’s Burnell Jenkins for the lightweight title.

With 10 seconds left in the first round, Jenkins won by a technical knockout (TKO) over Henry.

RCC’s Michael Pleasant went against AVC’s Dathan Dixon for the super-heavyweight title.

Dixon, the defending champion, kept his title in a unanimous decision over Pleasant.

RCC’s Ronnie Brown went against HCC’s Bernard Allen for a chance to compete for the light heavyweight division next month.

The fight went the distance and Brown captured the match in a split decision over Allen. Brown will now go for the light heavyweight title at next month’s boxing match, which takes place March 17 at Dixon Correctional Institution in Jackson, La.

The only other match of the 11 that was not a title match was won by AVC’s Delwin Brown in a unanimous decision over Robert Clay in the middleweight division.

Brown will box for the title next month.

Clay was the King of Hearts award winner.

In the opening fight of the night, LSP’s Michael Johnson won a unanimous decision over AVC’s Dontanya Wilson to win the featherweight title.

DCI’s Johnnie Williams won the light welterweight title after winning a unanimous decision over LSP’s Darrell George.

LSP’s Carlos Thomas is the welterweight champion. He won a split decision over HCC’s Dontrell Smith.

DCI’s Leroy Chatman claimed the light middleweight championship after he was victorious in a split decision against HCC’s Gregory Vincent.

LSP boxers won the next three matches for the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight titles.

Gerard Achelles won the middleweight championship in a split decision over DCI’s Kirlan James.

Terrance Williams won the light heavyweight title over DCI’s Keiton Mason in a unanimous decision.

Anthony Kinchen is the heavyweight champion after a split-decision victory over AVC’s Ken Brown.
