Bowling Green captures 5th consecutive South State Title

Bowling Green took home its fifth consecutive South State Title by downing Silliman Institute, 69-33, in the championship game Saturday at Columbia Academy.
Four players hit the double-figure mark for the Class AAA South State champs, including Katelin Junkins, Hallie Robertson, Ashley Foret and McKinley Seal.
Junkins led the team in scoring with 15 points and she was successful on 7-of-8 free-throw attempts. Junkins pulled down two rebounds, made two steals and dished out a pair of assists.
Robertson finished with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Robertson hit all four of her 3-point attempts. She also had two rebounds and a steal.
Foret tallied 11 points on 5-of-8 from the field and she hit her only attempt from the free-throw line. Foret grabbed five rebounds, made two steals and added two assists.
Seal recorded 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals for Bowling Green.
Waskom was almost in double figures. She had nine points, four rebounds, six steals and two assists.
Sydney Watson hit a pair of 3-pointers for her six points. Watson also had three boards, two steals and an assist.
Mason Edwards posted three points on a 3-pointer to go with a rebound.
Cailee Fruge added two points and two rebounds.
Bowling Green got out to a big lead early on. The Lady Buccaneers scored the game’s opening 12 points and extended their advantage to 19-1.
They led 21-4 through one and 43-17 by halftime.
In Friday’s action, Bowling Green was victorious over Columbia Academy, 50-32, which put the team in Saturday’s title game.
Fruge and Watson tied for the team lead in points, as each scored nine.
Fruge connected on four of her five shot attempts. She also had four rebounds.
Watson knocked down three 3-pointers for her nine points. She also grabbed five boards, made five steals and dished out an assist.
Waskom had eight points, seven rebounds, an assist and three steals.
Seal finished with seven points, six assists, three steals and a rebound.
Junkins recorded six points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Robertson logged five points and she hit 3-of-4 from the line to go with two rebounds.
Foret totaled four points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Shelby McDonald added two points, an assist and a steal in the win.
Like Saturday’s game, Bowing Green got out to a big lead early. This time the Lady Buccaneers scored the game’s first 14 points and led 16-3 through one quarter, and 35-12 at halftime.
The Lady Buccaneers opened the event by defeating Brookhaven Academy, 77-54, last Tuesday.
Four Lady Buccaneers made the All-Tournament Team, including Foret, Junkins, Seal and Waskom.
Bowling Green is playing in the Class AAA Tournament this week at Brookhaven Academy.
The Lady Buccaneers, who are the South No. 1 seed, goes against the North’s fourth-seeded team Heritage Academy today at 3 p.m.
