Carrie Theresa Ruiz Stogner, a resident of Bogalusa for the past 49 years, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa, at the age of 89 years old.
Carrie was born in Carville, on March 10, 1927 and later moved with her family to the Harahan area. As a young adult she worked for Western Union at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans, which she fondly reminisced about all her years. She married Tillman “Dutch” Stogner Sr. on March 10, 1950. They had six children. Sadly, they lost two children due to cystic fibrosis and twin daughters that were premature and lived only a short time.
Carrie was a women devoted to her Lord and to His church, fondly remembered by her grandchildren for quoting Scripture from the Word. She was an active member of Palestine Baptist Church and served in many capacities, including teaching the women’s Sunday school class for more than 38 years, and actively participated in a weekly Prayer Circle/Bible Study Group at the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial United Methodist Church. Carrie was also an active member of the Garden Club in the 80’s and The Civic League. She was a joy to be around, loving nothing more than sitting and visiting with anyone that came by, as well as making up her own rules to Liverpool Rummy, Mexican Train (Dominoes), and making folks laugh at the latest joke. Our community will greatly miss the coffee times at “Mom’s” house.
She is survived by two sons, Tillman Stogner Jr. (Jill) and Mike Stogner; one sister, Barbara Luquette; one brother, Alex Ruiz; grandchildren, Stephen (Sarah), Tom (Beth), Scott (Paula), Jon, and Josh Stogner (Leigha); great-grandchildren, Allyson, Andie, Ben, Will, Sam, Jack, Grace, Maggie, Jonathan, Tanner, Abby, Emma, Anna Kathryn, Emily, Kayla Stogner, Miranda, and Mitchell Magason; numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tillman Stogner Sr.; three daughters, Judy Stogner, Jody Stogner and Laura Lynn Stogner; one son, Stephen Stogner; daughter-in-law, Sue Smythe Stogner; her parents, Edward and Carrie Gomez Ruiz; two sisters; Lula Babin and Beulah Amedee; and four brothers, Manuel, Edward, George and Lauren Ruiz.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 23, at Palestine Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The funeral service was at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Fred Brumfield officiating. Interment followed at Palestine Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Palestine Baptist Church Benevolence Fund or the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe.
