Edith Parker

Edith Agnes (Houston) Parker, born Wednesday, July 4, 1923, in Yazoo, Miss., passed away peacefully in her home in Bogalusa on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the age of 92.

She was an employee of Bogalusa City Schools and a longtime active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Known to many as “Mammaw,” her door was always open and she was a surrogate mother or grandmother to all that passed through her door.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Howard T. Parker; her parents, John Washington Houston and Lievena Cooley Houston; as well as 10 siblings, Mable Barkley, Ethel Taylor, Joe Houston Sr., Carrie Buckelow, Curtis Houston, Wesley Houston, Ada Rushing, A.J. Houston, Virginia Houston and Ruth Houston.

Edith is survived by four children, Cindy Thomas of Poplarville, Miss., Barbara (Bobbye) Crawford of Bogalusa, Faye DeMarchis of Sunset, and James (Jimmy) Parker of Bogalusa; and three generations of grandchildren.

Services for Edith will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Bogalusa. Visitation was Thursday, April 21, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for family, and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. for friends. Visitation will continue Friday, April 22, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow visitation on Friday at 2 p.m.

Interment will be at Pomenah Cemetery in Bogalusa.
