Franklinton’s Zach Ginn finished tied for 29th in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships to cap off the 2016 season at the Wetlands in Lafayette on Wednesday and Thursday.

The senior finished with rounds of 87 and 81 for a 168, which was tied for 29th with E.D. White’s Brad Benoit.

To reach state, Ginn had to qualify through the district meet and the regionals. For both events, the LHSAA takes the top four teams and the top four individuals who are not on one of the top four teams.

Franklinton’s golf team nearly made it to state, but came up nine strokes short. Team scores are determined by taking the top four golfers’ tallies from each team.

“I was proud of my team,” Ginn said. “We only missed going to state by a couple of strokes. We won our league this year against all of the teams we played against all year and then we qualified for regionals as a team.”

Ginn, whose best round this year was a 75, said his strength in golf is that he is accurate with his irons and he is pretty good with his driver.

Ginn said it was a pretty good year.

“I had a couple of good tournaments early in the season. I went into a little bit of a slump with my putting later in the season,” Ginn said. “That’s why my scores at state weren’t that good. I missed almost all of my putts within 4-6 feet and that’s what killed my score. It was probably the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been with my putter in my entire life.”

Loranger’s Kristofer Kerr and Benton’s Hayden White tied for the title with a 136 and were declared co-medalists after a six-hole playoff in the field of 47.

E.D. White’s Nicholas Arcement was just two strokes behind for third, followed by Jennings’ Seth Cox (140) and E.D. White’s Will Dupont (145).

Benton won the team competition with a 586 total by 14 points over E.D. White. Teurlings Catholic (621) finished third, followed by St. Louis Catholic (626) and Neville (636). Eight teams were eligible for team points.
