On Monday, Bogalusa police arrested a 17-year-old high school student after she allegedly hit a teacher.

Police chief Joe Culpepper said Ashton Greely of Bogalusa allegedly walked up to a female teacher at around noon on Monday and tried to strike her in the face, but the blow ended up glancing off the teacher’s arm. Culpepper said surveillance video confirmed the incident.

“It looked like (Greely) attempted to hit her in the face and the teacher moved and she instead slapped her in the side of the arm,” he said.

The chief said he didn’t know why Greely allegedly hit the teacher.

“There is no indication in this report why Greely was upset with a teacher, only that the teacher was seated when Ms. Greely approached her,” Culpepper said, adding that there were no injuries reported.

Bogalusa High School principal Lesley McKinley declined to comment on the incident.

“After consulting with the superintendent, we have no comment on that,” he said.

Culpepper said immediately following the incident, school officials called the police.

Greely is being charged with a misdemeanor for battery on a teacher, which carries more penalties than a regular battery charge.

“Battery on a teacher is like battery on police,” Culpepper said. “So, there is a mandatory 15-day sentence.”
