Paul Dauterive was the overall winner in the 20th Milltown Classic 5K road run/walk race, which took place at the Timberlane Subdivision. It was Dauterive’s fourth-straight win at the event.
Dauterive, who recently graduated from Louisiana Tech, ran the event in 19 minutes, 38 seconds. Dennis Devore was runner up with 22:58 and Phillip Wedgeworth took third at 24:56.
“I did a triathlon (May 22). I’ve only been running three days a week (before the triathlon),” Dauterive said. “It’s also a weird time for me because I just got done with track season.”
Dauterive wrapped up his college track and cross country career at Louisiana Tech.
“I took a time off and I’m trying to get back in it for summer racing,” Dauterive said.
This year’s race, which is normally held at Cassidy Park, was moved to the Timberlane Subdivision because of damage to Cassidy Park from the flood.
“The course was really good,” Dauterive said. “It was straight out and back, which is pretty simple and easy. I didn’t have any trouble on it. The scenery was really nice, too.”
Allyson Crowe, who lives in Kentwood and was running the Milltown Classic for the first time, won the women’s title after finishing in 26:19. Tiffany Devore was second with a time of 29:41 and Melissa Devore ran in 31:02 for third.
Crowe was fifth overall.
“It was good,” Crowe said. “It wasn’t too hilly. I thought it was going to be tough, but it wasn’t too bad. It was a nice course and easy to follow.”
Peggy Wedgeworth was the top female walker at 38:42. Angela Stewart was second at 42:03, followed by Linda Inabnitt’s 44:55.
There were no male walkers.
The race benefits the service projects of the Bogalusa Rotary Club.
“None of this could happen unless we had good, loyal, dedicated workers like (race director) Brad Lewis and his committee,” Bogalusa Rotary Club president Merlin Duke said. “We think it’s a good service for the community. It’s a scholarship fund and it’s the 20th year. So there are many good things happening in Bogalusa and Rotary is part of it all.”
Duke said all agencies stepped up to the forefront and helped.
“It’s a community affair, not just a Rotary thing. We take the lead, but other people come along with us and help us make it successful,” Duke said.
Lewis thanked the Venture Scouts, the sheriff’s office and all volunteers for their help with the race.
“We couldn’t do it without them,” Lewis said.
Lewis said the Venture Scouts, led by Col. Bobby Miller, help the club every year with the race.
“Their help was very important this year because it was a new route,” Lewis said. “We had scouts stationed at every intersection and at the one- and two-mile marks and at the turnaround. It was an out-and-back course and the runners seemed to like that.”
The race featured a combined 27 runners and walkers.
Awards were also given out by age group.
