The 10th annual Sports Work Academy Basketball Camp is taking place next week on Saturday, June 18 at the YMCA on Avenue B.
“I am super excited about our 10th year having our camp in Bogalusa,” co-Camp Director Michael Galloway said. “This is truly a milestone.”
Galloway said the camp teaches basketball skills and life skills while also providing competition.
Galloway, a 1985 Bogalusa High School graduate, played basketball and ran track at BHS. After high school, Galloway went to Dillard University in New Orleans and played basketball. Galloway was an all-district guard at Bogalusa.
He is directing the camp with former LSU basketball player and former Portland Trailblazer Nikita Wilson. Wilson was the 30th overall pick in the 1987 NBA draft by the Trailblazers.
Former Oak Grove High School player and current Prairie View A&M basketball player, Ereyanna Magee, who is a sophomore, is also helping with the clinic.
“Ereyanna was our camp MVP back in 2012 and to have her back to speak to the campers is truly a blessing,” Galloway said. “She can share her work ethic with the kids and I believe they will relate.”
Murrell Galloway, a 1981 Bogalusa High School graduate, is also working at the camp and Galloway said he’d be the captain of the coaching staff. Galloway is a former all-district player for the Lumberjacks.
Former Lutcher High School and Southern University basketball player Darren Gaines is also attending the camp. At Southern, he was a two-time All-SWAC Conference performer and played alongside current University of Alabama head coach Avery Johnson.
The camp costs $20 per person and ages 6-18 are eligible to attend.
