Bowling Green School lost to Wayne Academy, 21-12, in the season opener, which took place at home Friday.

The Buccaneers trailed 15-6 at halftime.

Bowling Green coach David Currier said it took his team a little bit to settle in.

“We were getting better as the game went on, but we ran out of time,” Currier said. “We got tired in the middle of the game. I think they got tired toward the end. We saw some things that were good and some that we need to work on.”

Currier said Bowling Green had two big offsides penalties on fourth downs that resulted in first downs. He also said they had a turnover inside of Wayne’s 15.

Currier said Wayne had too many rushing yards.

Wayne finished with 301 yards of total offense — 174 on the ground and 127 through the air.

Bowling Green quarterback Cameron Bell was solid. He finished 11-of-24 passing for 130 yards. Currier said the Bucs had four drops.

Bell also ran for 43 yards on eight carries (5.3 yards per attempt) and a touchdown.

Currier praised his signal caller’s play.

“I was real pleased with our passing game,” Currier said. “Our quarterback Cam Bell did a good job. He’s legit. He was a rookie quarterback going in. I didn’t have any concerns. I knew he could play. He handled everything really well — running and passing.”

Bowling Green running back Cameron Cowart rushed for 46 yards on seven carries (6.5) and a score.

The Bucs finished with 113 rushing yards and 130 passing yards.

Defensively, Brandon McElveen led Bowling Green with 14 tackles. Tex Smith and Nathan Case had 10 tackles each.

Bowling Green returns to action Friday night when the Bucs travel to Adams County Christian School.
