SLIDELL — Bogalusa’s defense was solid through Friday’s game, but the offense struggled throughout in a 16-0 loss to Salmen on the road.
“We’ve been played well (defensively),” Bogalusa coach David Roberts said. “We’re young on offense. (Quarterback) Thomas (Turner) was out (due to injury). We couldn’t really do what we wanted to do. We kind of simplified it a little bit this week. We couldn’t move the ball. We couldn’t sustain any drives.”
Salmen (3-1) got on the board in the first quarter. The Spartans returned a punt about 10 yards to Bogalusa’s 40, but the Lumberjacks were penalized 15 yards. That moved it to the 25.
Salmen moved the ball to the 2, and on second-and-goal, L.J. Leonard threw a pass to Leevance Williams and he went in for the touchdown. Eddie Smith’s extra point made it 7-0 with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.
The Spartans began to win the first-half field position battle early in the second quarter and had chances to extend the lead, but Bogalusa’s defense did a great job of making stop after stop to keep it a 7-0 game.
In the second quarter, Salmen had a drive that started at the 50, but Bogalusa forced a turnover-on-downs at the 28.
The next possession began at the Lumberjacks’ 25, but Bogalusa’s defense held on third down and then the 26-yard field goal was wide left on fourth-and-4 from the 8.
Salmen’s final drive of the half began at the 50 with 45 seconds left. They moved it to the 36 before time ran out to end the first half.
It was 7-0 at halftime.
The game remained 7-0 through the third quarter.
Salmen began a drive at the Lumberjacks’ 37 with 11:07 left in the fourth quarter. On second-and-goal from the 1, Williams ran into the end zone and Smith’s PAT made it 14-0 with 6:35 to go.
The final points came late on a safety. Bogalusa had the ball its 10, but a snap past the quarterback went out of the back of the end zone to make it 16-0 with 3:58 left.
Salmen ran out the clock after the free kick in the 16-0 win.
Bogalusa is 0-4 this season. The Lumberjacks are back in action Friday on the road against Loranger. Loranger is 2-2 this season, and defeated Amite, 36-26, Friday.
