Franklinton, Varnado compete in powerlifting meet last week

Members of Franklinton and Varnado’s powerlifting teams flexed their muscles Saturday, as they competed in the St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational.
In powerlifting, participants get three opportunities to complete a successful lift in squat, bench and deadlift. The three categories are added together and the total weight is their score.
There are 11 weight classes. The boys go from 114-pound up to super heavyweight.
The girls’ weight classes are from 97-pound to super heavyweight.
In the boys competition, Franklinton’s Jyrian Magee lifted a total of 630 to finish sixth in the 123-pound weight class. Magee squatted 215, benched 140 and deadlifted 275. Pope John Paul II’s Brady Becker won with 935 after a 345 squat, 230 bench and 360 deadlift.
Varnado’s Chris Kimball had a 315 squat and 345 deadlift in the 148s. Pope John Paul II’s Austin Lang won the class with a 365 squat, 225 bench and 435 deadlift for a 1,025 total.
Four locals competed in the 165s. Franklinton’s Stevie Thompson tallied a 335 squat and 225 bench. Varnado’s Darian Vargas had a 195 bench and 355 deadlift while Franklinton’s Rondrick King posted a 175 bench and Varnado’s Travon Stokes benched 305 and deadlifted 425. Pope John Paul II’s Dylan Vidrine won the weight class with a 1,215 total. He squatted 475, benched 240 and deadlifted 500.
Franklinton’s Sebastian Bascle was 17th in the 181s with a 425. He squatted 125, benched 100 and deadlifted 200. Holy Cross’ Jalil Dukes won with 1,115 total after a 445 squat, 220 bench and 450 deadlift.
Franklinton’s Spencer Lambert was 13th in the 198s. He posted a 745 total with a 285 squat, 160 bench and 300 deadlift. Also for FHS in that weight class, Drake Jenkins benched 170 and deadlifted 280. The host school’s Brad Lewis won after posting a 425 squat, 275 bench and 435 deadlift for 1,135 total.
Varnado’s Andre Jones deadlifted 375 in the 220s. Northshore’s Matt Hebert won with a 465 squat, 290 bench and 500 deadlift for 1,255 total.
Franklinton teammates Joe Magee and Josh Gubert finished fifth and seventh in the 242s. Magee had a 1,045 total after a 400 squat, 265 bench and 380 deadlift. Gubert posted a 1,025. He squatted 405, benched 215 and deadlifted 405. Holy Cross’ Jack Tomeny won with a 1,150. He squatted 430, benched 250 and deadlifted 470.
Franklinton teammates Alex Kennedy and Seth Holmes were fourth and fifth in the 275s. Kennedy had a 910 with a 275 squat, 255 bench and 380 deadlift. Holmes posted an 870 after squatting 320, benching 210 and deadlifting 340. Northshore’s Tristian Johnson won with 1,140. He squatted 430, benched 255 and deadlifted 455.
Franklinton’s Chris Fisher, Cecil Tribe and Mason Givens were sixth-eighth in the super heavyweight. Fisher posted 785. He squatted 280, benched 185 and deadlifted 320. Tribe recorded a 255 squat, 190 bench and 265 deadlift for a 710. Givens finished with a 125 squat, 195 bench and 275 deadlift for 595. Also for Franklinton, Brian Miley had a 245 bench and 350 deadlift. Independence’s Paul Rogers won the classification with a 600 squat, 330 bench and 500 deadlift for 1,430 total.
In the girls competition, Franklinton’s Kaitlyn Miller was eighth in the 148-pound weight class with a 345. Miller squatted 115, benched 75 and deadlifted 155. Teammate Briana Nesbit benched 60 and deadlifted 135. Pope John Paul II’s Holly Hotard posted a 675 with a 270 squat, 125 bench and 280 deadlift.
Franklinton’s Alexa Barber and Camryn Jordan were fifth and eighth in the 165s. Barber put up a 530 with a 205 squat, 100 bench and 225 deadlift. Jordan had a 360 total with a 105 squat, 70 bench and 185 deadlift. Pope John Paul II’s Jamie Messa won with a 690. She squatted 265, benched 125 and deadlifted 300.
Franklinton’s Erin Mitchell squatted 110 and deadlifted 160 in the super heavyweight. Archbishop Hannan’s Sydney Allain won the class with a 225 squat, 130 bench and 265 deadlift for 620.
