Mt. Hermon’s Gerald Bunch was the Most Outstanding Performer in the District 8-B meet that took place Thursday at Hoss Memtsas Stadium in Harvey.
Bunch, who is the defending Class B champion in the long jump and 200 meters, won both of those events along with the 100 meters.
He long jumped 20 feet, 9 inches. Patrick Taylor Science and Technology’s Stefran Walker was second at 19-11. Mt. Hermon’s Device Taylor finished fifth with a 17-0.
Bunch ran the 100 in 11.11 seconds in a close race, as Patrick Taylor’s Caleb Randall was second in 11.15. Keondre Bunch was fifth in 12.39.
Gerald Bunch ran the 200 in 22.9 seconds, and Randall was second at 23.09.
Thursday’s meet was a qualifying meet. The top four from each event advance to the Region 3-B meet, which is Tuesday at Jennings High School.
Several Mt. Hermon athletes are headed to regionals.
Trey Roberts and Taylor both made it in the 300-meter hurdles by finishing second and fourth, respectively. Roberts ran a 46.97 while Taylor had a 48.05. Slaughter’s Colby Honeycutt was the winner in 45.61.
Taylor also advanced in the 800 at 2 minutes, 27 seconds. Slaughter’s Emmanuel Garba, who was the track MVP, won in 2:15.
Tyree Brumfield took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 21.09. Slaughter’s Honeycutt won in 18.79.
Dwayne Elzey qualified for regionals with a fourth-place finish in the shot put, with a distance of 33-7. Holden’s Cole Forbes, who was co-field MVP with Patrick Taylor’s Alex Walker, won at 37-5. Tanner Johnston was sixth at 32-10.
Mt. Hermon’s 4×100 relay team ran a 49.33 for third and the 4×200 squad was
second in 1:39.
The 4×100 runners were Clinton Roux, Brumfield, Roberts and Keondre Bunch. The 4×200 team had Elzey, Dylan Clark, Roberts and Gerald Bunch.
Slaughter won both the 4×100 at 47.71 and the 4×200 in 1:35.
Clark was sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:02. Garba won in 55.08.
Slaughter won the team competition with 187 points. Patrick Taylor was second at 179, as six teams tallied at least a point.
Mt. Hermon was third with 74 points, followed by Holden’s 68, M.L. King Charter School’s 19 and Crescent City’s three.
