VHS’s Foster, Bickham, Kemp all win event in district

Varnado’s Jaden Foster, Quierra Bickham and Yienna Kemp won an event each and Foster, Ke’arria Green and TyQuasia Allen all advanced to regionals in two events at the District 8-1A meet that took place Wednesday, April 19, at St. Martin’s Episcopal.
Foster won the 100 hurdles in 18.09. Covenant Christian Academy’s Adalyia Collins was second in 19.06.
Bickham was victorious in the long jump and Foster was third with distances of 15 feet, 6.25 inches and 13-4.5.
Kemp and Allen were first and third in the javelin with throws of 87-0 and 80-5.
Green is going to regionals in the shot put and 200.
Green and Allen both advanced in the shot put, as the two were second and fourth respectively with distances of 26-6 and 24-5. Covenant Christian Academy’s Brionte Jasper won at 26-8.
Green was third in the 200 with a time of 30.78. Covenant Christian’s Marianna Charles won in 27.42.
The meet was a qualifier. The top four athletes from each event moved on to the regionals. The Region 3-1A meet is taking place today at Broadmoor High School.
Three more Varnado athletes had third-place finishes, including Tyisha Newkirk, Destiny Keys and Tonisha Brister.
Newkirk ran the 100 in 13.86 for the third-place finish. Charles won in 12.67. Brister was fifth at 14.55.
Keys took third in the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 13 seconds. Covenant Christian Academy’s Symphony Brown won in 1:02. Kaylynn Roberts was eighth in 1:36.
Brister was third in the triple jump at 16-2.5. Ecole Classique’s Chelsea George won at 27-3.5.
Mykerra Jackson took sixth in the discus, as Covenant Christian Academy’s Caitlin Harris won at 94-6.5.
Brittany Smith was sixth in the 800 with a time of 3:29. Brown won in 2:36.
Covenant Christian Academy won the team competition with 147 points, as five teams had at least one point.
St. Martin’s Episcopal was second at 68, followed by Varnado’s 57, Ecole Classique’s 30 and Ridgewood Prep’s 18.
