The Washington Parish United Way Leadership Council partnered with International Paper, the Bogalusa Rotary Club, and the City of Bogalusa Parks and Recreation Department to host a “Day of Caring” by creating a “Born Learning Trail” near the splash pad in Cassidy Park on Friday.
Charlotte Champagne, executive director of the United Way Washington Parish Regional Office, said the United Way is trying to end poverty in southeast Louisiana with the vision to have equitable communities where all individuals are healthy, educated and economically stable.
As a way to help young children get ready for success in school and in life, the Born Learning Trail is a good start towards that goal, she said. It also inspires healthy living by being a walking trail outdoors amidst nature. And through the partnerships, it will make a collective impact on the kids and the community.
By early Friday morning, the park was abuzz with volunteers braving the heat for the children. Some were painting on the cement walkway, some were sanding or staining posts, and others were digging holes for their placement. The tasks were assigned according to the level of strenuousness.
By lunchtime, the trail had transformed that area of the park, and the fun was only about to begin. Champagne invites all parents to walk the Born Learning Trail with their children.
The trail was made possible by a grant from the IP Foundation.
