Bogalusa High School students were recognized by the Southeast United Dairy Association as the overall high school winners of the Saints Fuel Greatness Breakfast Challenge.
The press release said that of the 98 participating schools, Bogalusa had the highest percentage increase in breakfast participation at 45 percent, along with a 6-percent increase in milk consumption.
The reward for the feat was a Saints-themed celebration that took place in the school’s auditorium.
Saints safety Vonn Bell, who New Orleans drafted in the second round (61st overall) in 2016 out of Ohio State University, visited the school. Representatives from the Southeast United Dairy Association also came.
In his rookie season, Bell made 58 tackles to go with 25 assists, four passes defended, two forced fumbles, one recovery and a sack.
Bell said breakfast is very important.
“That’s what I was telling my guy on the way here, it’s just a way to start your day,” Bell said. “I think about it everyday because it’s really a big part of my day. It’s really about exercising, using your brain, it just starts your day.
“It’s really helpful. Every time I don’t have it, I think I’m going to have a mental error or something. I think it’s a really big, huge part of your day and how you jump-start it.”
After Bell spoke, souvenirs such as mini footballs and towels were thrown to eagerly awaiting students in the crowd toward the end of a fun celebration.
The New Orleans Saints open the 2017 preseason on Aug. 10 by traveling to face the Cleveland Browns at 7 p.m.
The regular season opener is Sept. 11 against the Minnesota Vikings on the road at 6:10 p.m.
The home opener is Sept. 17 against the New England Patriots with kickoff set for noon.
