Hoyt L. “Chick” Boyd

Hoyt L. “Chick” Boyd passed to eternal rest on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Mr. Boyd was born on Oct. 25, 1936, in Bogalusa. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Boyd was the son of Hoyt and Bobbie Boyd.
He grew up with his siblings, Charlene, Perry Nell, and Freddie, and was a lifelong resident of Angie, where he cultivated many lifelong friendships.
He graduated from Angie High School, and, upon graduation, joined the U.S. Army, where he proudly served his country.
He was a visionary and a savvy businessman, owning several businesses in the community. Among them were Pay-N-Save (now Pioneer), Great Southern Motel, Great Southern Speedway, Sunflower Grocery Store, Trade Center Hardware Store, Dollar General, Great Southern RV Park, Angie Auction, and Boyd’s Museum & Ice Cream Parlor.
Mr. Boyd loved serving his community, especially helping people. He was a big supporter of Boys Scout Post 313 in Bogalusa; he was a bluegrass music promoter; a Washington Parish Fair volunteer for over 25 years where he served as Fair President; he also served on the Washington Parish Tourism Committee, the Washington Parish Council on Aging, the Magnolia State Bluegrass Association, and the Varnado Store Museum as a chartered member. In 2014, he was named a Mile Branch Honoree for the Washington Parish Fair Association.
He held board-certified credentials in the Washington-St. Tammany Electric Co-Op, where he also served as a board member and held the office of Treasurer. In addition, he served proudly on the Washington Parish District 5 Fire Department; served as chief deputy for the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Department; and as chief of police for the Village of Angie.
An avid car race fan and professional driver for over 40 years, he won many races, and was the champion of many speedways. In 1985, he won the NASCAR Southeastern Winston Cup Series. He still holds the track record in Florence, Alabama.
His community was extraordinarily blessed to have a citizen like him.
He is survived by his children, Terry Boyd, Lisa Stout and her husband Dwayne, Mark Boyd and his wife Shane, and Cathy Pierce and her husband Scott; grandson, Chad Boyd and his wife Nicole. He is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend, Jessie Myers.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Audrey Mae Calliham; his son, Larry Boyd; his siblings, Charlene and Freddie; and Rescue, his beloved pet of 16 years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 13, at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and will continue at Angie Baptist Church on Friday, July 14, at 9 a.m. and will run until the funeral service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Colton Fornea will officiate the service and interment will follow at Bonnie Cemetery in Angie, with military graveside rites held by Magic City Post #24.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like that donations be made to Angie Baptist Church or Mile Branch Settlement.
