Ben’s Ford Christian School is on the road tonight, going to Brookhaven Academy as the Eagles seek to improve above .500. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Eagles enter this week with a 2-2 record after falling to Centreville Academy, 38-14, last week.
“Obviously, it’s a big game, especially for our playoff hopes,” Ben’s Ford coach Dean King said. “Every game is a big game from here on out. (Brookhaven) can throw the ball. They’ve got some big-play threats. We had a lot of injuries last week, but we’re getting a lot of them back.”
The Eagles were only able to dress 15 players last week because of injuries. Five players were out and two played on both lines.
Tyler Winstead threw for 105 yards on 5-of-9 passing, with two touchdowns. The scoring passes went to Kameron Underwood. Underwood caught four passes for 100 yards. He has five touchdowns this season.
King said Underwood has been playing well. He also said that Gage Tervalon has shown a lot of leadership on both sides of the ball. King said Tervalon is running the ball well and he is playing well defensively.
Brookhaven Academy enters this week with a 3-1 record. Brookhaven broke a 25-game losing streak in week two, which began the team’s current three-game winning streak.
“We were down to 11 last year, but we’re dressing 31 from freshman-up this year,” second-year coach Ron Rushing said. “We’ve got kids from different sports on the team, so there’s a lot of excitement. We don’t have much experience, but they play hard. We don’t have a strong running game, so we have to throw the ball 35-40 times a game.”
Rushing said his team has a pass first offense and tries to spread the ball around. Seven players have at least one reception.
Brookhaven has thrown 100 passes and has run the ball 37 times.
Quarterback Dawson Flowers has completed 59-of-100 passes for 867 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Cade Brown leads the team with 26 catches for 462 yards and six touchdowns. Rushing said Brown “high points” the ball really well and has good hands.
Tate Felder enters with 12 receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown. Luke Jackson has nine catches for 129 yards.
Logan Murray starts this week at 37 carries for a team-leading 200 yards and tops Brookhaven with two touchdowns.
The top defenders are middle linebacker Nick Ogden and defensive ends Cole Griffin and Levi Smith.
Ogden and Griffin lead the team in tackles with 35 and 27, respectively, while Smith has 11.
