Varnado’s Wildcats suffered a 35-18 loss to North Vermilion on the road in Friday night’s game.
“First you’ve got a long road trip. Add on top of it that they’re a very good 3A school and they’ve got more numbers than us. They have more depth than us,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “Anytime we step on the field, that’s an issue when you’re playing a bigger school. We’re also banged up. I think those things played a role in how we played Friday night. I think we were kind of looking forward to this week being an off week to get healed up.”
The game was close through three quarters. Varnado trailed 13-12 at halftime and 21-18 at the end of the third quarter.
James Williams threw a touchdown pass to Ardaryl McGowan. He also ran a touchdown in on a sneak. Desmond Harry scored a rushing touchdown.
Shaffett said the team has to get better in all three phases of the game.
“It’s still early in the season. We’ve played some pretty good ball throughout the season,” he said. “Each week, we’ve got to get better. Obviously coming off of a loss, we’re not quite there yet. We’re going to continue to try to get better each week and try to be peaking at the end of the season.”
Varnado is 2-2 and is on a bye this week. The Wildcats return to action Friday, Oct. 6, when they open District 8-1A play by hosting Covenant Christian Academy.
North Vermilion is 3-1 this year.
