Johnnye Mae Sibley Butler was born March 7, 1914, in Many, to John and Jessie Lee Cahee Sibley. She went to Glory to join her Lord and Jesus Christ on Oct. 12, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Butler Sr.; son, Terry Earl Butler; daughter-in-law, Lizzie Mae Alexis Butler; and son-in-law, Daniel Pool.

She leaves four children, Beverly Ann Poole (Navato, California), T.J. Butler Jr. of Franklinton, Johnny Sibley Butler of Austin, Texas, and Jesslynn Charmaine Taylor Butler of Jonesboro, Ga., as she moves to her next life.

She completed Grambling High School and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, where she received her undergraduate and master’s degrees. She did further study at Southeastern University in Hammond.

Her career was devoted to teaching in the elementary school system of Washington Parish, including Washington Parish Elementary School and Franklinton Elementary School. She was a pianist, and served as director of music for her beloved Winan United Methodist Church. She was a tireless worker in the United Methodist Women, at the local, state and national levels. She received many awards for her tireless efforts.

She had many passions during her lifetime, including following her beloved alma mater Southern University’s football team. The comments with her mother, who was a Grambling graduate, rang throughout the football season in our household. She also was passionate about the piano, and played daily at home during her early years. Her later years were devoted to her grandchildren and she saw all seven complete college and some with advanced degrees. She passionately loved to recite their names and educational accomplishments: Derrek Pool (U.C. Davis), Monica Pool (U.C. Santa Barbara and University of Texas at Austin), Jeffery and Chad Butler (Louisiana-Monroe) John Sibley Butler (University of Texas at Austin), Shea Taylor (Valdosta State University), Dane Taylor (University of West Georgia), Cydnee Taylor (Armstong State University, Georgia) and Sharlee Taylor (U.C. Berkeley and Harvard University). Johnnye Mae Sibley Butler always looked to the future.

She leaves a host of friends, relatives, and caretakers to celebrate her life. Her immediate families of the Sibleys, Butlers, Cahees, Tillorys and Alexises were embraced by her.

During the celebration of her 100th birthday, which was attended by family and friends, Southern University showered her with gifts and appreciation. Johnnye Mae Sibley Butler lived a life that was forever young. She will be missed by many. When you see that evening sky, make a wish upon a star, because there is someone there who loves you, always looking near and never far. Whenever an angel passes, to the other side, they leave a void on earth and put a light up in the sky, every times an angel flies.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. at Winan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darlene A. Moore, pastor, officiating. Interment will be held at Sweet Home Cemetery.
