Varnado’s Wildcats suffered a 45-0 loss to West St. John in a District 8-1A contest that took place Friday on the road.
The game was a “1 vs. 2” Class 1A match up. West St. John was No. 1 in the unofficial LHSAA Class 1A power rankings, and Varnado was ranked No. 2.
West St. John scored the game’s first touchdown when Varnado’s punter fumbled a snap and West St. John returned it for a touchdown.
West St. John had two long passes that put the Rams into scoring range for two more touchdowns in the first half.
Varnado had a touchdown called back by penalty in the first half.
West St. John led 12-0 after the first quarter and 18-0 at halftime.
“Anytime you go in the river parishes, you’ve got to play your best ball,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “I thought we played hard. I thought we played tough. The score is nowhere indicative of the way the game went. We just couldn’t seem to get anything going.
“The good thing is that we can move on and address some issues, go in and get ready for this week. We’ve still got two more big games coming for this season before we get to the playoffs.”
Varnado is 4-3 overall this season and 2-1 in district and fourth in the unofficial LHSAA Class 1A power rankings.
The first of the two big regular season games Shaffett alluded to is the Wildcats’ next contest, which is Friday at home against Houma Christian. The second of the two is a non-district game Friday, Nov. 3 on the road against Mangham.
Houma Christian is 6-1 overall and 1-1 in district. Houma Christian is coming off of a 40-21 victory over St. Martin’s Episcopal. Houma Christian is fifth in the unofficial LHSAA Division IV power rankings.
West St. John, which is tops in the LHSAA unofficial Class 1A power rankings, improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in district. West St. John is off this week and plays St. Martin’s Episcopal in its final district game on Friday, Nov. 3.
