The first day of the Franklinton High School Basketball Tournament saw Pine fall in the first game, Bogalusa come up short in the second and Franklinton defeat Varnado on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s contest featured all girls games.
Pine, which was playing its third game in three days, lost to Slidell, 47-18.
The game was close early on, as Slidell led 12-9 after one quarter, but the Lady Tigers opened the lead in the second quarter and essentially put the game out of reach, as Pine struggled with turnovers.
“Third game in three days and we were tired and we let the fatigue get to us mentally,” Pine coach Mary McGinnis said. “We’ll do better next time. We’re young. We’re getting better every game.”
Pine trimmed a 10-7 deficit to 10-9 on Kelsey Jenkins’ fast-break layup with 49 seconds left in the first quarter. Jenkins had four points.
Slidell ended the period with Chelsea Harrington driving to the bucket for a layup and it was 12-9 after one quarter.
Harrington’s bucket began a 16-0 run by Slidell.
Jaylynn Roberson made a steal, hit the layup, got fouled and converted the 3-point play with 6:31 left in the second quarter to make it 15-9.
Aamarian Ducre split from the free-throw line. The next four points came on layups by Ducre and Jocelyn Small for a 20-9 lead. Ducre hit a layup to make it a 13-point margin before Jordan Kauzlarich was good on two free throws and Jalynn Casborn hit both ends of a 1-and-1. The Lady Tigers were up 26-9 with 3:29 left in the first half.
Pine’s Savannah Kennedy stopped the run with a shot in the lane to make it 26-11 at the 2:28 mark.
Slidell extended the lead to 31-11 at halftime.
The Lady Tigers outscored Pine 10-0 in the third quarter, before going on to the 47-18 win.
Trayanna Williams and McKayla Jordan scored five points each and both hit a 3-pointer for Pine. Kennedy and Haleigh Temples posted two points each for the Lady Raiders.
Slidell’s Ducre tallied 16 points to lead all scorers.
Small recorded nine while Kauzlarich put up seven, Roberson posted five, Casborn and Mallory Hancock totaled four each and Harrington and Chantel Johnson added two each.
The second game saw Bogalusa come up short to Kentwood, 39-38.
Chloe Foster led the Lady Jacks with 10 points.
Prayja Bickham posted eight while Bianca Pittman, Quantasia Lewis and Shaunte Chatmon all put up six, Samyra White recorded two and Deranique Lee added one.
Bogalusa has lost three in a row, but the last two games have been by a combined three points.
In the third game, Franklinton defeated Varnado, 70-8.
Kaniya Dillon led the way with 27 points and she went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
India Dickerson posted 15 points, and Danaria Magee had 13.
Jalyn Bickham recorded eight points while Tellise Magee posted four and Addison Carter added three for the Lady Demons.
Jaden Foster scored four points for Varnado.
Tamarya Bell posted two points while Tanisha Brister and Destiny Keys added one each.
Yesterday’s schedule had three boys games, but they were not completed by press time.
The tournament continues today and tomorrow.
Today’s schedule features Pine and Lakeshore at 3:40 p.m., followed by Varnado and Mandeville at 4:50 p.m. Those two games are boys contests.
The next two are girls games with Varnado playing Pine and Franklinton going against Bogalusa at 6 p.m. and 7:10 p.m., respectively.
The final game is Franklinton against Bogalusa in boys action at 8:20 p.m.
Tomorrow’s schedule begins at 10:30 a.m. with Bogalusa and Slidell girls, followed by Mandeville and Lakeshore boys at noon.
The 1:30 p.m. game has Varnado and Slidell girls, followed by Bogalusa-Varnado boys at 3 p.m., Franklinton-Pine girls at 4:30 p.m. and Franklinton-Pine boys wraps up the event at 6 p.m.
