MANDEVILLE — Franklinton was defeated by St. Paul’s School and Brother Martin on the Demons’ final day of varsity action in the Lakeshore/Mandeville Summer League on Tuesday at Mandeville High School.
Franklinton suffered a 59-44 loss to St. Paul’s School in Tuesday’s opener.
The biggest key to the game was the final minutes of the first half.
Franklinton extended a 26-24 lead to 28-24 with 2:31 left in the first half when Lorenzo Hart took a pass from Mike Martin for a layup.
The game was competitive up to that point, as neither team had a lead bigger than five points.
The Demons struggled for the rest of the first half. St. Paul’s tied the game at 28-28 by the 1:55 mark, ended the first half on a 13-0 run and took a 37-28 lead at the break.
The run continued into the opening minutes of the second half, as the Wolves added four more points to their advantage to make it a 17-0 run and it was 41-28 with 19:05 on the clock.
Despite the run, the Demons were still in the game and made a run of their own.
St. Paul’s extended their lead to 46-32 with 12:58 left and the Demons got some stops on the defensive end and that helped them cut into the Wolves’ lead.
T.Y. Pope hit a shot and got fouled. He was unable to convert the free throw, but had pulled his team two points closer with 12:49 left. Pope then hit a layup, getting it to a 10-point game.
Kaleb Scott was good on a fastbreak layup and then Pope connected with Cameron Stewart for another layup.
Franklinton’s 8-0 run had the Demons deficit down to 46-40 with 9:19 left.
The Wolves responded by hitting a 3-pointer just 15 seconds later to make it a nine-point game.
St. Paul’s added two more on an offensive rebound and putback.
Avant Monnie hit a field goal to make it a 51-42 game with 6:14 left, but that was as close as the Demons were able to get in the 59-44 loss.
Pope led Franklinton with 25 points.
Stewart posted double figures, putting up 11 points.
Monnie recorded four points while Hart and Scott added two points each.
The second game was a 61-35 setback to Brother Martin.
Pope tallied 25 points to lead the Demons.
Franklinton coach Brad Oestriecher said that Tuesday’s effort was extremely disappointing.
“That is both on me and the leaders of the team,” Oestriecher said.
Tuesday’s game capped off play for the Demons’ varsity team in summer basketball play.
“We got better this summer, we had some guys step up and earn playing time. I’m looking forward to the winter,” Oestriecher said.
