George Thomas

George Curtis “Slue” Thomas, born March 15, 1933, died at the age of 85 after a brief illness and with his family at his side. He went home to be with the Lord on June 20, 2018.
George was a native of Bogalusa, and a longtime resident of Slidell. He was a Korean War veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.
George was the son of the late Cleaven Thomas and Evie Schillings Thomas Crain. He was the beloved husband and best friend of his wife of 60 years, Janice Hayman Thomas. George was the father of Leisa Brent (Will Jr.) of Watson, Tracy Zygmontowicz (John) of Nevada, Texas, and Melissa Steed (Chris) of Newnan, Ga., and the late Michelle Lynn Thomas. George is also survived by grandchildren, Megan Brent (fiancé John Miller), Kristen Brent (husband Daniel Orser), Kaitlyn Brent, John Curtis Zygmontowicz (wife Kami), Adam Zygmontowicz, Nathan Bordes, Sophia Steed, Brooke Steed, Brieanna Steed, Caitlyn Steed, Andrew Steed, Alexis Steed and six great grandchildren, Aaron Swick, Blake Swick, Cayden Brent, D.J. Miller, Evee and Zelda Zygmontowicz and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, daughter (Michelle) and siblings: Daniel Thomas, John Hines Thomas, Eudene Thomas Crockett, Vaughn “Big Slue” Thomas, Marceta Thomas Suchomelly, Charles Donald “Little Slue” Thomas, and Joy Sue Thomas.
George was a 1959 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. He also earned a Master’s degree from McNeese University in 1968 as well as a Master’s Plus Thirty. After graduation, he was hired by the St. Tammany Parish School Board. He served the parish as a coach, teacher, and principal, Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, Supervisor of Transportation and ultimately Director of Transportation and Child Welfare and Attendance. He retired from the St Tammany Parish School Board in 1996 after 37 years of service.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Saturday, July 14, at Honaker Funeral Home, located at 1751 Gause Boulevard West in Slidell, from 11 a.m. until 12:40 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 12:40 p.m., followed by a Memorial service at 1 p.m. Inurnment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
