The Bowling Green High School Buccaneers hosted the Ben’s Ford Christian School Eagles on Friday, defeating their rivals by the score of 46-8.
Ben’s Ford went into the game after a victory over the New Orleans Home School Team last week. Bowling Green had defeated Park Place Christian Academy in their previous game.
Quarterback Johntae McDowell led the Buccaneers in a strong showing against the Eagles, accounting for six of the seven touchdowns put on the board. McDowell threw 21 passes and completed 12, four of which resulted in a touchdown.
McDowell relied heavily on receivers Rashaan Duke, Steven Cooper and Cade Knight. McDowell and Duke completed two touchdowns. McDowell connected with Cooper and Knight for a touchdown pass each.
The Buccaneers mixed the passing game with a hard press from their running game. McDowell handed off to Larry Dillon at the 9 with four minutes left in the first half for a touchdown. McDowell and Kengie Gordon put another touchdown on the board from the 4-yard line two minutes later. Quarterback Jace Schexnider subbed in at the end of the third quarter and made a handoff to Dillon at the 11-yard line for another touchdown.
Eagles quarterback Tyler Winstead scored the Eagles’ touchdown with a quarterback keeper from the 1.
The first half was where most of the action happened.
A minute into the game, McDowell threw his first touchdown pass to Duke from the 10-yard line. Kade Day made the extra point kick and set the score at 7-0. Three minutes later, McDowell threw to Cooper from the 48-yard-line. Cooper then ran it in the rest of the way from the 40 for the touchdown. Day attempted the extra point kick but was blocked by a host of Eagles, which left the score at 13-0.
With a minute and a half left in the first quarter, Winstead ran a quarterback keep from the 1-yard-line for the Eagles’ touchdown. Winstead faked the extra-point attempt and passed it to Jarrett Williams for the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 13-8.
At the beginning of the second quarter, McDowell passed to Duke from the 12 for a touchdown. McDowell completed a pass to Knight for the two-point conversion and set the score at 21-8. McDowell followed it up with a touchdown pass to Knight with eight minutes left in the half from the 11-yard line. Day attempted the extra point, but it went low and the score was 27-8.
The Buccaneers’ defense managed to force the Eagles to punt and a three-minute drive put Bowling Green back in scoring position. McDowell handed off to Dillon at the 4 for their fifth touchdown. McDowell attempted another two-point conversion, but the Eagles held the line and the score went to 33-8.
With two and a half minutes left in the half and back in possession of the ball, McDowell handed off to Gordon at the 4-yard line. Gordon pushed through and put another touchdown on the board for the Buccaneers. McDowell succeeded in his two-point conversion attempt with a handoff to Brayden McGehee and the score at the half was 40-8 in favor of the Buccaneers.
The second half of the game saw a rallied Eagles’ defense. The Buccaneers scored a final time at the end of the third quarter, following a handoff from Schexnider to Dillon at the 6. The extra point attempted was blocked and the final score was 46-8.
Bowling Green (2-0) will travel to Play Silliman Institute on Friday, while Ben’s Ford (1-1) will host Amite School Center.
