Wanda Carney

Wanda Thornhill Carney, 85, a resident of Bogalusa, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2018, at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 11, 1933 in Foxworth, Miss. She was the middle child of three children born to Clarence and Ola Mae Thornhill. Wanda was married to the love of her life the late Tommy Carney.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Carney Purvis and Linda Carney Scott; and one son Charles R. (Kay) Carney, all of Bogalusa; one brother, Harry L. Thornhill of St. Francisville; five grandchildren, Benton M. (Myra) Purvis of Franklin, Tenn., C. Cody (Meagan) Carney of Bogalusa, Anna Kate (Clint) Casanova of Franklinton, Kristy A. Carney of Bogalusa, and John E. Brantley Scott of Bogalusa. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren whom she adored, Caden, Shelbylee and Crockett Carney, Parker, Ridley, Gatlin and Kendal Casanova and Gracie Scott; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence E. Thornhill and Ola Mae McKenzie Thornhill; and one sibling, Thomas R. Thornhill.

Wanda grew up in Foxworth, and graduated from Columbia High School. After high school, she attended Mississippi College. She enjoyed working beside her husband in their appliance business and recently Carney’s Furniture, which is still serving the citizens of Bogalusa for nearly 60 years.

She was a faithful member of Superior Avenue Baptist Church, where she loved singing in the choir. She also enjoyed working in the yard tending to her flowers, going fishing with family and friends and always had a freshly baked cake for any guest who came to visit. Mostly, her favorite hobby was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them.

Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 16, from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, and will continue Monday, Sept. 17, at Superior Avenue Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Clay Norwood will officiate and entombment will follow at the Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum.
