Bowling Green School senior Breanna Tobey signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Belhaven University and play softball for the Blazers.
“I pretty much wanted to play college softball. It’s always been the No. 1 goal. I decided the go to Belhaven because they have that strong Christian atmosphere and they have a really good academic program. I’m going into sports medicine and they have a good program for that. I also chose them because they have a good softball program too.”
Tobey had solid year this season.
Tobey was an All-MAIS player, the District 4AAA Most Valuable Player and she made the MAIS All-Star Team.
This year, Tobey hit .414 with a .497 on base percentage. Tobey recorded 10 doubles, two homers, 20 runs batted in and she scored 38 runs. She stole 18 bases in as many attempts. Tobey struck out only seven times in 135 plate appearances.
Tobey had a .967 fielding percentage. She made just three errors this year.
Tobey played shortstop for Bowling Green, but will move out to centerfield.
When asked what she brings to Belhaven, Tobey said, “I’m very very determined to get better everyday. I’m the type of person that if I mess up, I don’t get mad and bring the whole team down. I just try to get better from it. I’m a very coachable person. I am tough and I am also a leader.”
Bowling Green coach David Hood Burris, who completed his first year as the team’s head coach, spoke very highly of Tobey.
“In my opinion, they are not going to have a player that is going to work harder on-and-off the field and in the classroom,” Burris said. “She’s got the grades to go to Belhaven, and to be able to get a scholarship there, you’ve got to have the grades. That tells you she works hard on-and-off the field. This isn’t a one-year thing. For me being a first-year head coach and having a player like her in our program, it means a lot because she laid the groundwork for any other girls who want to play college softball. They now know what it takes on-and-off the field.”
Belhaven is located in Jackson, Miss.
The Blazers have had plenty of success over the last few years. Belhaven has reached been National Christian College Athletic Association runner up in two of the last three years.
