Bowling Green School’s Lady Buccaneers opened the season by going 2-1 in the Simpson Academy Tournament that took place on Saturday and hung on to defeat the Class AAAA champion on Monday.
The Lady Buccaneers fell in the opener, 5-0, to Brookhaven Academy.
Dixie Camaille and Kylee Burris recorded a hit each for Bowling Green.
The Lady Buccaneers rebounded and captured the next two games.
Bowling Green was victorious over Copiah Educational Foundation, 8-4.
Cassidy Spears hit a two-run homer. She tallied two hits in as many at-bats.
Camaille tallied two hits and a run batted in.
Julia Berggen posted one hit and a pair of RBIs.
Madelyn Burch and Hannah Varnado posted a hit and a run batted in each.
KaKa Seal and Morgan Lusk both had one hit.
The Lady Buccaneers capped off the tournament with a 5-1 win over St. Aloysius.
Abby Hodges and Jessica Talley had one hit each in the victory.
Bowling Green’s next game will take place tomorrow with a road game against Adams County Christian School.
On Monday, Bowling Green won a thriller over defending Class AAAA state champion Parklane Academy, 5-4, on the road.
The game was tied 4-4 through six innings.
Landry Dupont reached base to begin the seventh and went to second on Burris’ hit. Dupont stole third.
Spears then drove in the go-ahead and eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly — her second of the night.
Parklane had a chance to tie or win the game, but pitcher Madelyn Burch came through in the clutch.
Parklane began the inning with a double and moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt. Parklane had their No. 3 and 4 hitters in the order coming up and Bowling Green elected to walk both, loading the bases and putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Burch then struck out the next two hitters to end the game and cap off a thrilling win.
Bowling Green got out to a 4-0 lead through two innings after scoring one in the first and three more in the second. Parklane tied the game with two in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth. It stayed that way until the seventh.
Burch threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks (two intentional). At the plate, Burch recorded a hit.
Spears doubled, scored a run and drove in a pair of runs on the two sacrifice flies.
Burris posted two hits and an RBI.
Camaille had a pair of hits.
Dupont posted a hit, two runs, two runs batted in and she swiped a base.
Lusk tallied a hit and an RBI.
