The Bowling Green School Buccaneers hosted the Centerville Academy Tigers on Friday and won 14-12 in the second game of the season for both teams. The Buccaneers went into the game off a win against Cathedral High School the previous week, while the Tigers had won against New Orleans Homeschool in their previous game.
Defense was the name of the game on Friday, with both the Buccaneers and the Tigers unable to score until the very end of the third quarter. One particularly good showing was by Cade Morere, who was able to stifle a fourth-down push by Tiger quarterback Jaden Morris at the Bucs’ 8-yard-line and force a turnover on downs. Jacob Dobraska ended a 50-yard drive by the Tigers at the end of the first half with the recovery of a fumble at the Bucs’ 16-yard line.
The third quarter went fast with a single long drive by the Tigers totaling 18 plays. The drive ended with a handoff from Morris to Cade Hurst from the Bucs’ 2-yard-line for the touchdown. Morris attempted a two-point conversion with a hand off to Kason Clark, but the Buccaneer defense held the Tigers out of the endzone and the score was 6-0 at the end of the third quarter.
A minute and a half into the fourth, Bowling Green’s Emmanuel Powell recovered a fumbled snap from the Tigers at the Centerville 25. Bowling Green quarterback Rashaan Duke went with the keeper and pushed the Bucs forward 23 yards and within striking distance at the 2. Duke then handed off to Kengie Gordon, who pushed through the Tiger defense and got the Buccaneers on the board. The Bucs went for the conversion with a pass from Duke to Cade Knight that was successful. The score went to 8-6 in favor of the Buccaneers.
With minutes left on the clock, the Centerville Tigers seemed to steal the game. At Centerville’s own 33, Morris passed to Colby Welch who caught it at his team’s own 49, broke through the defenders and ran it in for the touchdown. While the conversion attempt failed, the Tigers took the lead, 12-8, with 1:30 left on the clock.
But the Buccaneers rallied.
A pass from Duke to Knight went for 56 yards to the Tigers’ 29. The Buccaneers kept up their push. With 20 seconds left, Duke passed to Knight from the 15-yard line. Knight caught it in the end zone for the touchdown and the game eventually ended with the final score of 14-12.
Bowling Green improved to 2-0 this season. The Buccaneers’ next game will take place on the road Friday against Amite School Center. Amite School Center is 1-2 and lost to Brookhaven Academy, 46-7, last week.
