No. 7 seed Pine will take to the road this week to face off against No. 2 seed Many, as the Raiders play in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A state playoffs Friday at 7 p.m.
This is the furthest the Raiders football program has gone in the playoffs.
“It’s a goal that our program has been chasing for the last couple of years and it’s nice to reach it,” Pine coach Bradley Seal said.
Pine is 9-3 this season, including the two playoff wins. The Raiders have won eight of their last nine games. Last week, Pine defeated No. 10 Avoyelles, 35-20.
Second-seeded Many lost its first three games this season and has not lost since. It is a streak spanning nine games, including last week’s 24-20 victory over No. 15 East Feliciana.
“They have two big powerful backs that we’re going to have to be ready to tackle,” Seal said. “Offensively and defensively, it starts on the offensive and defensive lines.”
Last year, Many reached the second round of the playoffs after going to the semifinals the two years before.
These teams met in the second round of the playoffs in 2017. Many won that game, 41-22.
“You can pull from that because a lot of our seniors played against them in 2017 — but as far as game planning and scheming, it’s two different teams,” Seal said.
Last week, Adrianuen Johnson had a big game.
Johnson scored four total touchdowns. He ran for 144 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns. Johnson also returned an onside kick 55 yards for a score.
Drake Westmoreland had 52 yards rushing along with 49 yards receiving.
Defensively, Anterrius Walker intercepted a pass.
Seal said that outside linebacker Aurdrlique Dural played very well and was a key to stopping Avoyelles’ run last week.
The winner of this game plays either sixth-seeded Kentwood (8-4) or No. 19 Capitol (6-5).
