As you know, Gov. John Bel Edwards’ Executive Order 52 made progress toward our attempt to start moving through the Phases of opening that are ahead of us. I know that everyone feels a sense of returning to normal from this, and some sense of relief.

Just as you, I welcome this transition. I honestly believe if we continue to work together, we can accomplish flattening the curve and move closer to our normal way of life.

However, as we move to progressively and safely relax some of the requirements of the Executive Order, I have found myself recently trying to be somewhat relaxed in my defense against the risk we face daily. These recent experiences remind me that safety is a matter that requires constant reminders.

As your parish president, I feel it is my duty to constantly remind everyone to be vigilant in our fight and continue to remain safe as we progress through the Phases ahead of us.

It is extremely important to me that we get back to normal as soon as possible, yet the importance of safety is still our No. 1 factor. We owe that to ourselves and especially to our large population of senior citizens living in our parish. Continue to wear masks or face coverings in public spaces. When you wear a mask, you protect others, and when others wear a mask, they protect you. It’s the most considerate thing you can do for someone else.

Also, continue to practice social distancing by keeping six feet of physical space between yourself and others. Know the symptoms — fever, cough and shortness of breath. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your cough. Wash your hands.

I am confident that together, we will overcome this. I commend everyone for what you have been doing. Everyone, please stay safe. You know what to do.
