John Elias “Big John” Morgan was born to the late Thadis Lafayette and Beatrice Smothers-Morgan on Feb. 24, 1952, in Bogalusa. He died on July 5, 2020, in Quincy, Mass. John was better known as “Big John” by his friends and family.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and attended Metropolitan Baptist Church in Bogalusa, in his early years.
John graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1971. After high school, he relocated to Boston, Mass., and worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for 10 years. He later worked at TKT Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass., for 20 years.
John loved Bogalusa, people, dancing, barbecuing, fishing, walking, and was an avid handyman around the house. He loved his family and friends and displayed his love through giving of himself and his time for many. He had a large personality that was warm, welcoming, and memorable. As a resident of Quincy, he was also a fan of the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots.
He has been married to Andrea King Morgan for almost 36 years and from this union, one daughter was born, Kathleen Morgan.
He leaves to cherish his memories: loving wife, Andrea King Morgan; a daughter, Kathleen (Kevin) Morgan O’Brien of Cambridge; grandson, Isaiah John Morgan; granddaughter, Kaydence Wharton of Cambridge; sisters, Hazel Viamill of St. Louis, Mo., Mary Morgan of Conyers, Ga., Carolyn Brown of Stone Mountain, Ga., Joycelyn Johnson (Larry) of McKinney, Texas, and Catherine Morgan of Clarkston, Ga.; brothers, Joseph Pennington of St. Louis, Thadis Morgan Jr. of Stone Mountain, and James Morgan of Decatur, Ga.; one aunt, Pearlie Morgan of San Francisco, Calif.; special friends, Raymond Lowery and James Brown; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thadis and Beatrice Morgan; brothers, Robert Milton Morgan and Walter Dale (David) Morgan; and sister, Ruth Lee Jefferson.
