Bowling Green School’s Matthew Downs

Bowling Green School’s Matthew Downs is a three-sport athlete.

The senior plays basketball, football and baseball.

In basketball, Downs is a power forward. He plays centerfield in baseball. On the gridiron, Downs is a free safety.

Downs was second-team all-district last year in basketball and he was first-team all-district in football this past season and second-team all-district in 2019.

“Matthew Downs exemplifies what our program is all about,” Bowling Green School basketball coach Pat King said. “He is team first, self second. Whatever we need him to do he does it with no complaint, but with a willing attitude. He guards, he rebounds, he knows our offensive/defensive system, he directs, and leads. Matthew may not lead the team in scoring, but he can fill up a stat sheet with rebounds, blocks, steals, and assists. As a program, we talk a lot about using the game of basketball to glorify God and in His word Paul writes to the church of Philippi, ‘Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.’ (Philippians 2:3)

What do you enjoy most about playing your sports?

Getting along with the people I play beside.

What do you like best about being a student athlete?

Getting the hard part done during the day and doing something I love after school.

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? Why?

Teammates Javon Bickham, John Downey, Kengie Gordon and Jacob Dobraska and Bowling Green football coach Riley Boudreaux. There are some days when I don’t want to participate in practice, but somehow they push me through it.

Who is your favorite athlete? Why?

Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker because he doesn’t do more than what he needs to do, he’s just himself and he gets rewarded for it.

Favorite team?

Los Angeles Clippers.

Best thing about Washington Parish?

The people are so interactive and they are friendly and they welcomed me here from being from Mississippi.
