Franklinton’s Tayte Landry finished as runner up in the Division II’s 198.3-pound weight class in the state tournament last week at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Landry, a sophomore, posted a 675. She squatted 300, benched 120 and deadlifted 255.

Tioga’s Samantha Paul won with an 805.

Landry set personal records in squat and total.

“For me personally, it was a great experience,” Landry said. “Coming in the top 10 is a big deal, but the top three, it’s kind of unbelievable. Coming into powerlifting, I never thought I’d come this far.”

Landry made it to state last year, but did not get to compete because the competition was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Landry said she was very nervous.

“It’s the same as every other powerlifting meet, but there’s more at stake and more people watching and that’s what made me nervous,” Landry said.

Franklinton was the only team from Washington Parish in the meet.

Angel Dufrene was fourth in the 97s with a 350. She squatted 135, benched 80 and deadlifted 135. Tioga’s Cassi Perry won the title with a 475.

Dufrene made it to state last year.

Arielle Magee was fifth in the 220.3s. Magee squatted 185, benched 115 and deadlifted 165 for 565. Leesville’s Rylei Taylor won with a 710.

Tomeny Shalen was sixth for the 198.3s. She posted a 495 with a 170 squat, 95 bench and 230 deadlift.

Ava Roshto took eighth in the 132.3s. She had a 140 squat, 90 bench and 240 deadlift for 470. South Terrebonne’s Harley White was the state champion with a 690.

Hannah Spears came in ninth in the 123.5s. Spears had a 450 total after squatting 150, benching 75 and deadlifting 225.

Marleigh Schilling was ninth for the 148.8s. She posted a 525 with a 225 squat, 90 bench and 210 deadlift. Beau Chene’s Savannah Lavergne was the state champion with a 720.

Schilling made it to state last year.

Grace Mitchell was 10th in the 132.5s. She made it to state last year.

Tioga won the state title with 52 points, as 17 teams posted points.

Leesville was second with 31, followed by South Terrebonne’s 29, Assumption’s 19 and North Vermilion rounded out the top five with 17 points.

Franklinton was ninth with 11 points.
