After enjoying its first off day of fall camp the previous day, Southern Miss returned to the football practice field Thursday morning for its first session in full pads.
The practice, which went 2 hours, 30 minutes, was the sixth for the Golden Eagles and it allowed them their first opportunity to tackle. First-year coach Will Hall said that the team run period was extremely physical and he was pleased with the effort on the first day in full pads.
“We managed the elements better today,” said Hall. “It is day six and we are starting to get used to the heat and I thought we pushed (through it) today. I didn’t see people going down for little things.”
That progress helped the Golden Eagles get through another solid day of preparation as they continue to get ready for the season opener, Saturday, Sept. 4, at South Alabama.
Hall went on the say that the hitting in full pads was good, but that the team has been physical since the start of camp.
“We had some good knocks around on both sides of the ball,” said Hall. “But that is the way that it has been every day. We are going to be a physical football team, because you have to be physical to survive in this program. That is just the way we do things.”
